Pryor presses to London's Assay Office

Pryor Marking Technology has announced a contract to supply new hydro-pneumatic presses to the Assay Office London, one of four UK sites which independently tests and hallmarks jewellery and precious articles.

Pryot presses to Assay OfficeThe presses have been specifically designed and manufactured by Pryor's engraving department in response to the customer's requirements for a new design of press.

The first bespoke prototype was purchased in September 2007 and a further six presses have now been ordered for installation at the Assay Office's new sub-office at Heathrow. Designed and manufactured to suit the Assay Office's existing marking stations, the new presses have a highly sensitive foot-pedal control system which leaves the operator's hands free for accurately locating the item to be marked in the press. They also have an adjustable lift function and the press 'ram' has been manufactured by Pryor to accommodate the Assay Office's existing tooling.

The hydro-pneumatic presses are suitable for use with a compressed air supply in the range of 1-9 bar (15-130 psi), and have an integrated hydraulic intensifier function that has a load capacity of 600kg at 6 bar.

Pat Geary, workshop supervisor at the Assay Office London, explained: "Pryor has worked with us for nearly 100 years and the relationship continues to flourish. Their highly skilled engineering team have made a fantastic job of responding to our specific needs and producing these prototype presses. This first order is just the start and as demand for hallmarking continues to increase we envisage purchasing a number of new systems over the next five years as part of a rolling programme of press replacement."

Les Stenton, who is responsible for the development of the specialist engraving services at Pryor, continued: "The relationship with the Assay Office is one of our longest standing and most valued. As Pryor leads the way in the utilisation of the latest marking technology, we are delighted that we can share this knowledge and expertise with one of the oldest and most respected organisations in the country. In addition to London, we already supply marking systems to the other three UK Assay Offices in Sheffield, Birmingham and Edinburgh as well a number of international offices including Cyprus, Denmark, Egypt, France and Malaysia."
