New high performance drills
Two new adjustable high performance drill ranges have been launched by Allied Maxcut to provide high metal removal rates and flexibility of diameter.

The AMEC Revolution drill and AMEC Core drill are adjustable, indexable carbide drills designed to produce high quality large diameter holes and deliver excellent productivity.
Revolution drills are designed to drill from solid with no pilot hole. This is accomplished by using an over-centre cutting geometry for the indexable carbide inserts and the single adjustable cartridge, which allows the diameter to be altered by up to 5.1mm, giving a hole size range of 50.80mm to 76.20mm.
Core drill’s primary application is to open out a pre-drilled pilot hole to a larger diameter in a single operation. Utilising two or three adjustable cartridges, each holding either two or thee indexable carbide inserts, the Core drill has a wide scope of adjustment, from 50.80mm to 63.50mm on the smallest drill in the range and 104.65mm to 142.75mm on the largest. Larger diameter specials are also available.
A key advantage of the Core drill is that it enables large diameter holes to be produced on machines with lower power ratings, thereby simplifing production planning and give greater flexibility in terms of the plant used for specific drilling and manufacturing operations. Also, the drill’s high rigidity makes it perfectly suited to rough boring operations, where high material removal rates are required.
When used to drill cores, the drill’s design enables it to tolerate core shifts of up to 3.175mm. As both drills use multiple indexable inserts, chip size can be kept to a minimum for easy evacuation from the bore – enabling maximum drill depths of 298mm and 292mm to be achieved with the Revolution drill and Core drill respectively. In addition, the cartridge assemblies on both drills can easily be replaced if they become worn or damaged without the need to invest in a complete new tool holder.
Allied Maxcut’s managing mirector, Rod Crawford, said: “These new drills are important additions to our catalogue and not only open up new opportunities for us in a number of areas, but also provide some significant advantages and benefits to manufacturers and sub-contracting customers across Europe. The fact that both drills are adjustable means that they provide a huge amount of versatility, in terms of the diameters that can be produced with a reduced product inventory.”
He added: “Also, as the Core Drill range can produce large diameter holes with reduced power requirements, this means that they can be used on a wider variety of machine tools giving greater production flexibility.
